Shouldn't there be some serious thought given to what any organization wants to get out of social media?
These sites are designed around individuals and their social needs and desires. If an organization wants to use it successfully, they need to identify goals for the portal. Are you actively recruiting supporters? Volunteers? Raising your general visibility? Connecting with other organizations? All of these could guide you while you're making it up as you go along.
Just a thought.

Chris,
Good thoughts re: social media for charities. Nice point about being wary of 'social media consultants'. I've seen too many charities who thought they could simply farm out the social media aspect rather than actually letting it be a part of their staff/volunteer and supporters day to day lives. Hope you make it Vancouver sometime again,

Sandy Reynolds, who has a company "Leadership on Purpose" is the presenter at the NextLEVEL Leadership webinar on Saturday. She's a good person to talk to you if you're interested in this topic because she's done exactly what Chris suggests here: jumped in and swam around (hasn't drowned yet, I don't think). She's learned lots on the journey. Visit her website at: http://www.leadershiponpurpose.com/LOP_The_Learnings_Catalysts.html
